Pitt Polder major grassland fire
just north of the Swan-e-set Bay Resort. Units from Pitt
Meadows, Maple Ridge, Greater Vancouver Regional District and
Ministry of Forests fought the blaze which covered an enormous
area. Water bombers contracted to the Ministry of Forests also
assisted. A grow-op was eventually found amongst the forested
area that was burned. August 1998

In this MVA (motor vehicle
accident) the vehicle was wedged under the trailer unit of a
semi. The occupants were trapped and required the Jaws of Life
to extricate. However, we had to stabilize the truck first to
ensure that the load did not shift while fire and paramedic
personnel worked to free the patients.
In this MVA we needed to remove
the drivers door with the Jaws of Life while the car was
upside down in a ditch. This requires us to think "outside the
box"; not an easy task in the early morning hours when you've
been awakened from your sleep.
In this MVA we had to use extensive "cribbing" to stabilize
the overturned vehicle and then used our air lifting bags to
raise the car enough to get the occupant out through the side
window past the collapsed roof.
Traffic accident are always
very dangerous to emergency responders. As shown here, we will
often block lanes of traffic with apparatus. This is to
protect our safety. Many firefighters, paramedics and police
officers are killed or injured every year by drivers who hit
them while looking at the original accident and not paying
attention to traffic ahead of them. Please don't be a "looky-loo",
our safety may depend on it!
The horse rescue call shown here
is typical of the type we regularly attend in the rural
farming areas of the community. In this photo a firefighter is
assisting the owner in comforting a trapped horse while other
personnel prepare to harness the horse and pull it to safety.
We also are called to attend cattle which fall into the deep
ditches and become trapped when "milk fever" hits them or when
they are just thirsty and underestimate the danger of the
ditch edge.
In this MVA the
vehicle lost control and struck a power pole near Kennedy Rd.
The pole sheered off producing a dangerous situation for all
of the emergency responders. Tremendous teamwork can be seen
here as firefighters and paramedics work to care for and free
the trapped occupant.
In this MVA we had to remove the
roof of a vehicle which had gone into a ditch and trapped the
driver. The roof was removed to give paramedics access to the
patient while we extricated her using the Jaws of Life.
